5 Year Anniversary Gifts

Your 5th anniversary is your first milestone anniversary, not counting the 1st. You are definitely no longer considered newlyweds, but on the other hand your marriage is still real young. 

Of course, you want to get your spouse something special to remember this anniversary by because you want to make sure that your marriage lasts another 5 years; get this gift wrong and you could be headed down a slippery slope. (I hope you know that I'm kidding, if a gift matters that much, your marriage wasn't strong to begin with).

While no one knows for sure why wood was chosen as the traditional material for a 5th anniversary, I think it's because wood symbolizes a solid relationship that is still malleable. It can be changed into almost anything you can imagine from its original form.

While wood is a material that can be made into everything, it's also something that can be destroyed by fire. I personally think that wood was chosen as a material for 5th year anniversary gifts because it can be transformed into almost anything you can think of, yet it is still a material that can be destroyed by fire; symbolizing a marriage that is young enough it can be destroyed, yet still ever changing and solidifying by the day.

Silverware is the modern gift for a 5 year anniversary gift. Even more confusing is why it was chosen as the modern gift to give for a 5th wedding anniversary. 

The modern anniversary gift list was written in the 18th century and the gift of silverware demonstrated to women that their place was at home in the kitchen and not in the workplace. How things have changed. Now a days a silverware gift can be given to either a husband or wife depending on their interests.

While sticking to the traditional or modern anniversary gift lists can be fun and take a little stress out of the shopping experience, these gifts are not right for everyone. 

Sometimes it's just best to purchase or make something from the heart for your anniversary.
